Will You Marry Me?

Preface

Let me start by saying that I had absolutely no clue that a proposal was coming. A few months ago, Casey said something along the lines of, "Let's be married in three years," which I was fine with. My mom was always asking me when I thought he would propose and I told her that it didn't matter because I knew that it would happen, but that it would happen when the time was right and I was happy just being with him. Also, Sneaky McSneakerson picked out my ring all by himself and estimated my ring size by looking through my drawers for other rings when I wasn't home.

The Good Stuff

We were flying to Seattle to see my family for Christmas on December 23, 2009. We flew from Burlington to Philadelphia on a commuter plane and then from Philadelphia to Seattle on a larger one. Casey knows that I am a total freak in that I adore flying (I should have been a flight attendant or a pilot). I'm like a little kid in a candy store when I fly. He asked me at the beginning of the longer flight (as I sat in my seat, grinning like a moron at absolutely nothing at all, just happy to be on a airplane) if being on a plane was one of my top three favorite places in the world to be (I said yes; little did I know that he was already sure of that and planned to ask me to marry him on one for just that reason!).

We were in first class, so we had free drinks and a very nice dinner (seriously...it was chicken carbonara pasta and it was incredible; it was like restaurant food, not airplane food). They served us warm oatmeal raisin cookies and just treated us like royalty (thank you, US Airways!). At one point, Casey said, "Is there anything that would make this evening more perfect?" I replied that I didn't think so. Little did I know...

After dinner and dessert, Casey asked me if I had to go to the bathroom. I thought that it was because I was on my second pomegranate cosmopolitan and I'm always about to wet myself after I drink anything (alcoholic or not). I didn't, though, so we continued talking. We were both exhausted, since we had each worked that day, so we decided that we would nap for the rest of the flight. Casey got up to go to the bathroom and I was like, "Well, I'll go, since we're going to go to sleep." Casey goes, "When you get back, let's act out an Office scene. Be thinking about which one it's going to be." (We're always quoting and making references to The Office...we are hooked on that show!).

Well, I came out of the bathroom and Casey was in the aisle (he had been watching the overhead "Occupied" light and waited until it turned off when I unlocked the door) on one knee!!! I was like, "Oh, I get it! That one episode where Jim got down on one knee on the sidewalk and Pam thought he was proposing and he was like, 'Oh, I need to tie my shoe!' ...GET UP! People are going to think you're really proposing!" He didn't get up, though, and he said, "Will you marry me?" and made me look down (I hadn't even noticed that he had the open ring box in his hand!). I was like, "You're SERIOUS?!" And I pulled him up and said "YES!" about ten times and we hugged and kissed and spent the rest of the flight kissing and sweet talking and nauseating the other passengers. After we landed, the flight attendant did the whole "Welcome to Seattle" spiel and then said, "And congratulations to Katherine and Casey...Katherine accepted Casey's proposal somewhere over Michigan!" and everyone started clapping!
